Dawn Redwood Bonsai Starter Tree

Metasequoia glyptostroboides or Dawn Redwood is an outdoor, deciduous tree which has bright green foliage during the summer, becoming tawny pink and gold in autumn before dropping its leaves altogether. The Dawn Redwood is a good choice for bonsai as it can be trained into most styles, especially informal upright styles. 

It is a hardy tree in temperate areas, however it may need protection in the winter where temperatures fall below -10°C. Keep in full sun during the growing season, but protect from very hot sunshine, because the leaves may be in danger of burning.

New growth is very soft, so allow shoots to harden before pruning. Water regularly and generously throughout the growing season. In hot weather you need to water two to three times a day. Never allow the root ball to dry out.
